Got a roof leak – what can you do?
A roof leak is not what you really want. Often the time a leaky roof happens is at the most inconvenient time, it interrupts your life and can often be a costly repair.
It is possible if you have a minor roof leak, you may be able to repair it yourself. Before you can do this however, you need to find the leak. So how do you do this?
Here are some basics on finding a roof leak.
Now, we suggest you don’t go up onto the roof as this is dangerous.
Here are some steps to work out whether the leak is a leak or is it just condensation.
A roof leak will leave a stain on the ceiling. It will be a fairly large stain and it can appear in any spot, whether in the middle of the ceiling or close to exterior walls. Look for a dark centre that lightens towards the edges.
On the other hand condensation leaves a different type of stain. Condensation stains tend to be several stains, rather than just one large stain. They tend to be near a wall and can be seen whether it’s raining or not. The stain itself is different to a leak stain as it will have a white spot in the centre of the stain.
If you think this is condensation it would help to talk to a builder or your local roofer to see what can be done. Whether it is a roof leak or condensation you need to deal with the issue otherwise it will cause bigger problems in the house and may become a health issue.
Another sign of roof leaking is a sagging ceiling. This is nearly always a sign of rainwater having collected in that spot. This really should be repaired immediately.
Another thing to look out for is if you see your wallpaper is peeling or coming off, or the paint is peeling off the walls, this can be another sign that there might be a leak in your roof especially if it’s on an inside wall.
Mould is another sign that your roof might be leaking or that there is a condensation problem. Mould is also not something that you want to have in your house as it is a health issue. It would help to deal with this issue as soon as possible.
Again, as the roof is a dangerous place to be we advise that you get a professional to help you with the problem. Even if it is a small roof leak…it is still better to make sure it is fixed properly.
